Substance Use

Substance misuse or over-use is often part of the picture when students experience depression, anxiety, or problems meeting their potential in school and life tasks.  SCS counselors ask about substance use whenever a student comes to request services.  They then discuss with clients how their use may be impacting the areas that concern them. This discussion is generally integrated into the counseling which focuses on clients achieving their goals.  The SCS does not conduct formal substance abuse assessments at this time.  Whenever a substance use disorder appears to be the primary area of difficulty, counselors may refer to outside specialists in the field.  Most often SCS refers students needing substance abuse interventions to Community Family Resources located at 1619 S. High Street in Ames.   If additional referrals are needed, please contact the Clinical Care Coordinator in the Student Counseling Service.
