Take Time to Recover from Life’s Stressors
Keeping up with classes, assignments, friends, family, and extracurricular activities can make college a stressful time. When we don’t take time to recover from life’s stressors, stress can affect us both physically and emotionally. Unhealthy levels can often lead to headaches, muscle tension, sleep difficulties, anxiety and depression. Chronic stress is often linked to emotional distress, gastrointestinal problems, migraines, coronary disease, and low quality of life. If you’d like to learn to use the mind-body connection to recover from stress in healthy ways, then the Biofeedback Center is for you!
What is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback is a tool that helps us observe the body’s physiological responses to everyday events. Once we are aware of these stress reactions, we can learn to change our body’s response through biofeedback training, which often results in greater relaxation, focus, and healthier coping strategies. At the SCS Biofeedback Center, you can see, hear, and become more aware of your body’s stress response and learn to turn on the relaxation response.
Becoming aware of your body’s stress response and learning to recover from those patterns will help you:
• Reduce chronic stress and anxiety
• Develop better coping responses
• Increase emotional regulation
• Decrease self-consciousness
• Quiet the mind
• Improve general well-being
The SCS Biofeedback program is open to all ISU students currently enrolled in classes. To start your biofeedback experience, attend an initial orientation for an introduction to the various tools and programs available.
To schedule a biofeedback orientation, call 294-5056 or stop by the Student Counseling Service reception desk on the 3rd floor of the Student Services Building.
- Mondays: 2:10-3:00pm
- Wednesdays: 4:10-5:00pm
- Thursdays: 2:10-3:00pm
- Fridays: 11:00-11:50am
What Happens Next?
Once you have completed the orientation, no appointments are necessary to use the Biofeedback Center. Simply come in to use the equipment at your convenience during our office hours: Monday – Friday, 8 am – 5 pm. Most students come in once a week for one hour or twice a week for thirty minutes. Students report noticeable changes in themselves after one session, and experience long-lasting change in 6-8 sessions.
